Assignments: For students interested in creative writing
1-In a 10-page essay/short story, rewrite one of Eva Ibbotson's novels in a modern context. Support any the changes that you make by also giving insight into the novel. EX: Making Harriet a singer in the modern version, instead of a ballerina, tells us what about the novel, the historical time period or our modern world.
2-Write a short story or play of your own within the historical context of the novel.
Assignment 2: For students interested in History
-Write 5 Literacy Letters to the protagonist or another major character telling them why and how their stories relate to the modern day; each letter should focus on a different aspect of the novel.
-Write 5 Literarcy Letters from the protagonists or another major character's point of view, discussing the differences between their time and the modern world.
Assignment 3: For students interested in Literary Analysis
-Choose a thread within the novel that you find interesting. ie: food, clothing, setting, language, etc. and write 6 pages discussing why you think this is important to understanding the novel and how this thread functions within the novel.
Assignment 4: For students interested in Film/Film Studies
-Create a "book trailer" for either A Company of Swans or A Countess Below Stairs. Students may work in groups to act out scenes that will be included in the trailer or (for students who wish to write rather than film a trailer) may write a script for a movie trailer: choose contemporary actors and actresses for each of the main roles and write the dialogue as well as cuts for each scene to be placed in the movie trailer, including any text that would appear on screen.
Assignment 5: For students interested in Art/Design
-Create a new book jacket for either A Company of Swans or A Countess Below Stairs. Students may create the book jacket using whatever creative medium they prefer: drawing, painting, using digital media, etc. The four areas include the front cover, the back cover, and the two inside flaps. Students will be provided with this sample format but may choose to deviate from this format:
